How to use automated discounts for more profit in Google Shopping

Key takeaways
  • With automated discounts, Google adjusts the price for users who click on your Shopping ad several times a day, within the limits you set.
  • According to Google, typically 10 to 40% of the selected products are discounted at the same time, usually by up to 20% below the current price. The goal of the feature is higher gross profit.
  • Requirements are cost prices and minimum prices in the feed, conversion tracking with cart data and a store that adopts the prices transmitted by Google.
  • Sale prices and promotions remain the simpler alternative. For every price reduction in Germany, you are required to state the lowest price of the last 30 days.

In Google Shopping, many merchants compete for the same click with often identical products. Buyers in German-speaking countries compare prices closely, and a visible offer often decides which ad they click.

Discounts that appear automatically in your ads can significantly improve the performance of your Shopping campaigns. But whether they pay off is decided by the margin, not by revenue. In this article, we show what forms there are, what they require and how we use them so that more profit remains in the end.

Three forms bring discounts into your ads automatically

Automated discounts are price reductions or offers that are served according to fixed rules or dynamically, without anyone changing each price individually.

Automated discounts

Google offers an additional feature in Merchant Center which, according to its own description, is intended to increase gross profit. Google continuously estimates how often a product is shown, clicked and purchased in Shopping ads at different prices. From this, the system calculates an optimized price several times a day. The calculation takes into account price elasticity, effects across the entire product range, seasonal trends, your margins and your purchase conversions from Google Ads, among other things.

You set the limits yourself:

  • You choose which products may be discounted.
  • You enter the cost price (cost_of_goods_sold) or the gross margin.
  • You set a minimum price (auto_pricing_min_price) or a maximum discount of at least 5 % below the current price.

According to Google, typically 10 to 40% of the selected products are discounted at the same time, usually by up to 20% below the current price. Only users who click on your Shopping ad see the optimized price, on the product page and at checkout.

Sale prices in the feed

Via the attributes sale_price and sale_price_effective_date you add reduced prices on a schedule. Google then shows the original price crossed out next to the reduced price.

For merchants in Germany, the Price Indication Ordinance (Preisangabenverordnung) applies: anyone who announces a price reduction must state the lowest total price of the last 30 days before the reduction. Check that the feed and store carry this reference price correctly.

Promotions in Merchant Center

Promotions appear as an offer notice or coupon code directly in the ad. They are set up once and then run based on rules. They increase attention for an ad without changing the base price.

Discounts increase clicks and conversions, margin decides success

Discounts in Shopping ads attract attention. Many users specifically look for deals, and an ad with a visible benefit is clicked more often. The conversion rate also benefits, because price-conscious buyers are more likely to complete a purchase.

But more clicks and more orders are not yet a success. Every euro of discount comes directly off your margin. A discount only pays off if the additional sales more than make up for the lower contribution margin per sale. That is exactly the approach of Google's automated discounts, which optimize for gross profit based on your cost prices.

Four tools manage discounts automatically

  • Sale prices in the feed: scheduled discounts via sale_price and sale_price_effective_date.
  • Promotions: coupons and offer notices that are visible directly in the ad.
  • Automated discounts: dynamic prices based on your cost and minimum prices.
  • Third-party tools: Solutions such as Channable or Patagona support dynamic pricing and discount management.

Which tool fits depends on the product range, margin structure and store system.

Automated discounts require clean data

Before Google can optimize prices, three foundations must be in place:

  1. Conversion tracking with cart data: Your Shopping campaigns must measure conversions in Google Ads, and the tracking must pass on the purchased products. The feature does not support conversions from Floodlight or Search Ads 360. We describe how to set up tracking properly in our article on Google Ads conversion tracking.
  2. Cost and minimum prices in the feed: Without cost data, Google cannot optimize for profit. This data is usually provided by the inventory management system and reaches the feed via feed management.
  3. A store that adopts the price: Your online store must display the price transmitted by Google for the respective user and charge it at checkout. For Shopify, there is the “Google & YouTube” app for this, and for Shopware 6, WooCommerce and other systems there are solutions via partners.

You can see in Merchant Center whether the feature is enabled for your account and your target countries.

How to integrate discounts into existing Shopping campaigns

  • Start small: Test discounts first with one product group.
  • Align feed and store: Prices in the ad and in the store must match, otherwise products may be disapproved.
  • Adjust the campaign structure: Discounted products get their own campaigns or labels.
  • Review the bidding strategy: Discounts lower the cart value. Adjust the target ROAS or, better, pass on conversion values that reflect the margin.
  • Formulate the offer clearly: Short texts and transparent conditions.
  • Use the right timing: Plan discounts for seasonal peaks such as Black Friday and Christmas.
  • Measure success: Compare click-through rate, conversion rate and contribution margin with non-discounted products.

We set a clear limit for every discount

The biggest risk is the margin. Discounts must not result in hardly any profit being left in the end. That is why we calculate every price reduction against the contribution margin and set minimum prices that secure it.

Permanent promotions wear off. Those who constantly see discounts wait for the next one, and your store's price image suffers. Discounts work best when targeted and time-limited.

The technical implementation must be right. Google has clear requirements for sale prices and promotions. If they are not met, products are disapproved or ads are blocked.

Keep an eye on how competitors react. If you lower prices aggressively with repricing tools, a price spiral quickly develops in which all merchants lose. Clear lower limits and a well-thought-out strategy prevent this.

Conclusion: automated discounts pay off when they are steered toward profit

Automated discounts are an effective tool for making Shopping campaigns more successful. They increase visibility, click-through rate and conversions without you having to adjust each price individually.

The key is to align them with profit: with cost prices in the feed, minimum prices that protect the margin and measurement that shows the contribution margin alongside revenue.
