Google Ads for car dealerships and dealers: 14,659 search terms analyzed.

In Google Ads, car dealers face a large but highly competitive search market. Almost all commercially interesting search patterns are already advertised by several providers, including large vehicle portals. If you want to sell profitably here, you need to know where purchase-ready demand lies and what a click is worth in each line of business.

For this, we carried out a German keyword analysis for the period July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026: 14,659 keywords with average monthly searches, competition level and competition index, bid ranges for the top ad position, changes over three months and year over year, and monthly search volumes over twelve months.

The bids are not fixed costs per click, but planning values from Google Ads for placement at the top of the search results. The actual CPC depends on location, device, search query, competition, ad quality and bid strategy, among other things. Segment volumes cannot be added up either: "BMW Elektroauto gebraucht kaufen" (buy used BMW electric car) belongs to used cars, electric mobility and make and model searches at the same time.

The market is large and competitive almost everywhere

The complete keyword pool reaches a gross search volume of 8,138,910 searches per month. The distribution by competition level shows how commercialized the market already is:

Competition level Keywords Gross search volume Share of volume
High 11.063 6.968.210 85,6 %
Medium 1.625 909.320 11,2 %
Low 1.482 256.830 3,2 %
Unknown 488 4.550 < 0.1%

More than 85 percent of search volume is in keywords with high competition. That does not mean car dealers pay high costs per click everywhere. Because of the many make, model and long-tail searches, the search-volume-weighted bid range for the top position across the entire pool is only about 0.16 to 0.90 euros. The competition shows in the fact that almost every purchase-ready search pattern is already being advertised.

This average hides large differences between lines of business.

Every line of business has its own cost per click

The greatest demand comes from specific search patterns rather than from the term "car dealer":

  • Vehicle condition: used, nearly new, demonstrator
  • Make: BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW, Porsche
  • Model: Audi A3, VW Tiguan, BMW X1
  • Drive: electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid
  • Location: nearby, city, region
  • Use: family car, van, motorhome
  • Direction of business: buy, sell, finance, trade in

For campaign planning, this segmentation is far more meaningful than a total volume.

The biggest search terms are cheap, but not automatically valuable

Keyword Searches per month Competition Top-of-page bid
gebrauchtwagen 201.000 High 0,04–0,40 €
auto kaufen 135.000 High 0,06–0,82 €
autohaus 110.000 Medium 0,35–1,47 €
bmw gebrauchtwagen 90.500 High 0,26–1,25 €
audi gebrauchtwagen 60.500 High 0,37–1,54 €
mercedes gebrauchtwagen 49.500 High 0,17–0,62 €
vw gebrauchtwagen 40.500 High 0,50–1,15 €
autohändler 40.500 Medium 0,33–2,08 €
autohaus in meiner nähe 33.100 High 0,39–1,41 €
gebrauchtwagen in der nähe 27.100 High 0,08–0,55 €
autohändler in meiner nähe 22.200 Medium 0,37–1,96 €
e auto kaufen 18.100 High 0,29–1,21 €

Low bids on very general used car terms do not mean cheap customer acquisition. Many of these searches lead to large vehicle portals or private listings, or are still at an early stage of research. Terms that refer to dealers, locations or inventory can be economically more valuable despite lower volume.

Used cars drive demand, and people search by make and model

More than 6,000 keywords clearly refer to used cars, nearly new cars or demonstrators. This is the largest submarket in the analysis.

Keyword Searches per month Competition Top-of-page bid
gebrauchtwagen 201.000 High 0,04–0,40 €
bmw gebrauchtwagen 90.500 High 0,26–1,25 €
auto gebraucht kaufen 74.000 High 0,05–0,47 €
audi gebrauchtwagen 60.500 High 0,37–1,54 €
gebrauchtwagen kaufen 49.500 High 0,06–0,54 €
mercedes gebrauchtwagen 49.500 High 0,17–0,62 €
vw gebrauchtwagen 40.500 High 0,50–1,15 €
porsche gebrauchtwagen 27.100 High 0,06–0,49 €
gebrauchtwagen in der nähe 27.100 High 0,08–0,55 €
skoda gebrauchtwagen 14.800 High 0,11–0,66 €

Very often, people search directly for a make, series or model. Competition therefore shifts from the general dealership website to the specific vehicle page. A dealer with matching inventory can hold its own against large portals in these searches if the ad leads directly to the available vehicle or to a matching inventory overview.

That is why we map the actual vehicle inventory in the campaign structure: by make, model, drive, body type, price range, location, availability and condition (used, nearly new, demonstrator). A general ad for "buy used car" only partly uses the search potential.

Local searches combine purchase intent with a clear location

Keyword Searches per month Competition Top-of-page bid
autohaus in meiner nähe 33.100 High 0,39–1,41 €
gebrauchtwagen in der nähe 27.100 High 0,08–0,55 €
autohändler in meiner nähe 22.200 Medium 0,37–1,96 €
fiat händler in der nähe 22.200 High 0,32–1,18 €
kia händler in meiner nähe 4.400 High 0,32–1,32 €
skoda händler in meiner nähe 1.900 High 0,27–0,88 €

"autohaus in meiner nähe" (car dealership near me) is growing 83 percent year over year, "autohändler in meiner nähe" (car dealer near me) by 22 percent.

Local demand arises from more than city keywords. Relevant patterns also include "near me", "nearby", local dealers, dealership open, make plus dealer, make plus location, used car plus location and model plus city. With several locations, we separate campaigns by catchment area so that budget, inventory, location information and bids can be managed regionally.

The long tail of makes and models determines scaling

More than 8,000 keywords combine a make or model with buying, used cars, leasing or ordering. Notable searches include:

Search term Searches per month
BMW Gebrauchtwagen 90.500
Audi Gebrauchtwagen 60.500
Mercedes Gebrauchtwagen 49.500
Ford Tourneo Custom 49.500
VW Gebrauchtwagen 40.500
Porsche Gebrauchtwagen 27.100
Audi A3 gebraucht 12.100
VW Tiguan gebraucht 12.100
Mini Gebrauchtwagen 9.900
Audi Q3 gebraucht 8.100
Audi Q5 gebraucht 8.100
Seat Ateca gebraucht 6.600

As a result, the market is highly fragmented:

  • The 100 highest-volume keywords account for only about 44 percent of gross search volume.
  • Reaching about 77 percent of volume already takes around 1,000 keywords.
  • More than 9,200 keywords each have fewer than 100 searches per month.

Individually, the many small keywords barely deliver enough data, but together they make up a considerable part of qualified demand. For large inventories, we therefore generate and update ads, ad groups and landing pages from current inventory as automatically as possible. Sold vehicles stop being advertised immediately.

Vehicle buying is a separate and significantly more expensive market

Keyword Searches per month Competition Top-of-page bid
auto verkaufen 40.500 High 1,59–4,82 €
autoankauf 8.100 Low 2,06–5,19 €
ankauf auto 5.400 High 2,16–5,47 €
auto online verkaufen 5.400 High 2,57–6,17 €
gebraucht auto verkaufen 1.900 High 0,92–4,05 €
unfallauto verkaufen 1.300 High 3,36–9,54 €
auto verkaufen in der nähe 1.000 High 1,44–4,06 €
autoankauf in der nähe 390 High 1,55–4,61 €

In vehicle buying, the weighted top-of-page bid range is around 0.59 to 2.75 euros, significantly above classic used car terms. Niches such as accident cars, engine damage or certain electric vehicles reach even higher values.

For dealers, buying can still be particularly attractive, because this is where new vehicle inventory potentially comes from. Its value depends on different factors than selling: expected purchase margin, likelihood of resale, days in stock, reconditioning costs, age and condition, regional demand and vehicle segment.

That is why we keep buying campaigns completely separate from sales campaigns. In a shared budget, the more expensive buying clicks would crowd out delivery of the inventory campaigns. A note on the data: the selling area contains an unusually large volume for variants of "Wir kaufen dein Auto" (We buy your car). This is mostly navigation to a specific brand and not general car buying. This demand belongs in a separate competitor campaign or is excluded.

Electric mobility is growing year over year, but fluctuates strongly

The electric and hybrid vehicles segment comprises just under 1,000 keywords with around 677,000 searches per month.

Keyword Searches per month 3-month trend Year-over-year comparison
e auto kaufen 18.100 −63 % +174 %
gebrauchte e autos kaufen 4.400 −55 % +184 %
tesla kaufen 8.100 −45 % +23 %
günstige e autos 22.200 −63 % +83 %
bmw ix3 kaufen 720 −45 % +555 %
skoda enyaq gebraucht kaufen 720 −54 % +418 %
id 3 gebraucht kaufen 590 −55 % +243 %

The data shows two opposing developments: year over year, a large share of electric car keywords is growing very strongly, while many of them have declined significantly over the last three months. The market apparently reacts strongly to events, offers or seasons. Discussions about subsidies, new models, price changes or manufacturer promotions can shift demand in the short term; the cause cannot be determined from the keyword data alone.

For your campaigns this means:

  • Budget electric and hybrid vehicles separately.
  • Do not derive daily budgets from historical annual values alone.
  • Check bids and budgets more frequently.
  • Differentiate by model, new or used, and price segment.
  • Run Tesla and other manufacturer terms separately from general electric car searches.
  • Compare inventory and search demand regularly.

New car searches are smaller, but clearly focused on offers

At around 60,800 searches, the direct new car pool is significantly smaller than the used car area.

Keyword Searches per month Competition Top-of-page bid
neuwagen kaufen 3.600 High 0,31–2,03 €
günstige neuwagen 2.400 High 0,40–1,35 €
neuwagen angebote 1.900 High 0,41–1,55 €
dacia neuwagen 1.900 High 0,18–0,78 €
auto neu kaufen 1.900 High 0,44–1,65 €

"neuwagen angebote" (new car offers) is up 53 percent both over three months and year over year. People searching for new cars expect specific prices, delivery times, financing rates or promotional models. For franchised dealers, model promotions, vehicles available immediately and financing offers are therefore usually more effective than a single general new car campaign.

Financing and leasing cost more per click

At around 19,500 searches, the clearly identifiable financing and leasing area is small; much financing interest is hidden in general purchase searches. The weighted bid range is 0.44 to 1.97 euros, and individual keywords reach more:

  • "auto raten kaufen" (buy car in installments): €0.96–3.28
  • "Mazda CX-30 Leasing": €0.59–3.66
  • "Gebrauchtwagen günstig finanzieren" (finance used car cheaply): €0.55–2.43

Financing terms show high purchase intent, but also attract people who are mainly looking for a low monthly payment. So present purchase price, monthly payment, down payment, term and final payment clearly and separately.

Commercial vehicles are an attractive submarket for specialized dealers

Commercial vehicles, vans and campers reach around 214,000 searches per month.

Keyword Searches per month Competition Top-of-page bid
ford tourneo custom 49.500 High 0,12–2,59 €
vw caddy gebraucht 9.900 High 0,09–0,74 €
transporter gebraucht kaufen 6.600 High 0,06–0,95 €
mercedes vito gebraucht 6.600 High 0,06–1,07 €
mercedes nutzfahrzeuge 5.400 High 0,54–1,56 €
sprinter kaufen 2.900 High 0,08–2,65 €

The volume is lower than for passenger cars, but search intent is more specific and vehicle value is often higher. Commercial buyers look at different features: payload, cargo volume, wheelbase, body, seats, towing capacity, tax and business use, and immediate availability. We therefore run commercial vehicle campaigns separately from private passenger car campaigns.

Demand peaks in March

For each segment, we calculated an index from the monthly search volumes. 100 corresponds to the average month of the period.

Month Total market Dealership/dealer Electric/hybrid
July 2025 107,8 104,0 82,9
August 2025 105,0 101,0 82,8
September 2025 97,3 97,3 76,7
October 2025 99,7 96,5 88,4
November 2025 93,1 90,8 82,8
December 2025 87,3 79,2 92,2
January 2026 107,3 108,5 105,3
February 2026 102,3 107,6 93,0
March 2026 115,8 125,3 152,9
April 2026 102,5 106,9 152,5
May 2026 94,9 96,3 105,0
June 2026 87,0 86,6 85,6

In March, the entire keyword set is around 16 percent above the annual average, and dealership and dealer searches about 25 percent. In December, local dealer searches are particularly weak, around 21 percent below average. Electric and hybrid show peaks of more than 50 percent above the annual mean in March and April.

The gap between the strongest and weakest month is:

Segment Gap between strongest and weakest month
Total keyword pool around 33%
General car buying around 53%
Dealership and dealer searches around 58%
Vehicle selling and buying around 49%
Electric and hybrid around 99%

So do not spread your budget evenly across the year, and keep a reserve especially for March and partly April.

We separate campaigns by intent, margin and inventory

The analysis results in the following structure:

Campaign Core intent Typical keywords Priority
Local dealership Find dealer or location autohaus in der nähe, autohändler München Very high
Used cars in general Browse vehicle inventory gebrauchtwagen kaufen, gebrauchte autos Very high
Makes and models Find a specific vehicle bmw gebrauchtwagen, audi a3 gebraucht Very high
New cars and promotions New vehicle or offer neuwagen kaufen, neuwagen angebote High
Electric and hybrid Look for drive type or electric model e auto kaufen, enyaq gebraucht High
Vehicle buying Sell own vehicle autoankauf, auto online verkaufen Separate
Financing Look for installments or financing auto finanzieren, auto auf raten Medium
Commercial vehicles Look for a commercial vehicle sprinter kaufen, transporter gebraucht Depends on dealer
Competitors and portals Look for a specific platform mobile.de, Autoscout24, WKDA Test separately

The areas differ greatly in search volume, cost per click, intent, vehicle margin, type of conversion, geographic reach, value of an inquiry and suitable landing page. An inquiry about "Audi A3 gebraucht" (used Audi A3) cannot be evaluated by the same economic rules as "Unfallauto verkaufen" (sell accident car) or "Auto finanzieren" (finance a car).

A starting point for budget allocation

For a dealership with a relevant used car inventory, the following allocation can serve as a starting point:

Area Share of search budget
Used car inventory and general purchase searches 30–35 %
Make and model searches 20–25 %
Local dealership and dealer searches 20–25 %
Vehicle buying and trade-ins 10–15 %
Electric, hybrid and new growth segments 5–10 %
Tests, new models and seasonal promotions 5–10 %

This allocation is not a universal benchmark. It depends on inventory, margin, locations and business model. A dealer without active vehicle buying reserves no budget for it; a commercial vehicle specialist needs a significantly higher share for vans and business customers.

The maximum cost per click determines your margin per vehicle

The analysis contains no conversion or sales data. From keyword values alone, neither cost per inquiry nor ROAS can therefore be calculated reliably. For your own calculation, we recommend this logic:

Metric Calculation
Affordable cost per sale Contribution margin per vehicle sold × maximum accepted marketing share
Affordable cost per inquiry Affordable cost per sale × closing rate of inquiries
Affordable cost per click Affordable cost per inquiry × click-to-inquiry rate

A keyword with a CPC of two euros can be highly profitable if it regularly leads to high-margin sales. A click for 40 cents can be too expensive if the searcher is only comparing offers. What matters is the relationship between search query, advertised vehicle, vehicle margin, quality of the inquiry, closed sale and days in stock.

In the dealership accounts we manage, the click-to-inquiry rate is around 13%: 100 ad clicks result in about 13 inquiries.

Six data traps distort market size

  • Close keyword variants: Google often assigns the same volume to almost identical search terms. These values cannot be added up as independent demand.
  • Navigational searches: Terms such as "Autohaus König", "Wir kaufen dein Auto" or names of local dealers are mostly navigation and not freely available new customer potential.
  • Portal searches: Keywords with mobile.de, Autoscout24, Carwow or other platforms have a different intent than a direct dealership search and are evaluated separately.
  • Parts and repairs: The list contains many searches for tires, engines, transmissions, spare parts, workshops and repairs, which are largely unsuitable for sales campaigns.
  • Historic or rare vehicles: Searches for classic cars, rare series or special vehicles are only relevant if matching inventory is available.
  • Erratic growth values: Very high percentage changes sometimes arise from small starting volumes or from the rounded volume brackets of the Keyword Planner. They are a market signal, not an exact forecast.

We exclude these search patterns before launch

Jobs, careers and apprenticeships; opening a dealership; dealer licenses and business registration; spare parts; tires and rims; engines and transmissions; repair instructions and workshop manuals; model cars and toys; wallpapers and images; operating manuals and PDFs; technical problems; forums and pure experience reports; insurance; rental cars. We exclude private sales, export, and accident and scrap vehicles unless they are part of the business model.

With such a large long tail, ongoing analysis of the actual search queries is an integral part of campaign management.

Ten findings shape your strategy in car retail

  1. Used cars are the largest area of demand. General, make-specific and model-specific used car searches dominate the analysis.
  2. Local dealer searches have considerable volume. "Autohaus in meiner Nähe" (car dealership near me) alone reaches 33,100 searches per month.
  3. Make and model searches are indispensable. Many searchers already have a specific vehicle in mind.
  4. The market is highly competitive. Around 85.6 percent of volume is in keywords with high competition.
  5. Costs per click differ greatly by line of business. Used car searches are comparatively cheap, buying and financing significantly more expensive.
  6. Vehicle buying needs its own campaign. Intent, CPC and economic value differ fundamentally from selling.
  7. Electric mobility is growing, but fluctuates strongly. High year-over-year growth is offset by sharp short-term declines.
  8. March is the most important month. Local dealer searches are then about 25 percent above the annual average.
  9. The long tail determines scaling. The 100 largest keywords cover less than half of the search volume.
  10. Inventory data drives the campaign. Make, model and vehicle ads only run as long as the vehicles are available.

For questions about buying a car, Google cites ADAC, HUK and platforms

We searched Google for 15 typical questions, for example "gebrauchtwagen kaufen worauf achten" (what to look for when buying a used car), "auto verkaufen wo am besten" (where best to sell a car) or "e auto kaufen oder leasen" (buy or lease an electric car) (queried on October 22, 2026). For 14 questions, an AI Overview appears above the search results; only "neuwagen rabatt verhandeln" (negotiate a new car discount) has none.

The AI Overviews cite 25 different websites in 40 mentions. ADAC has six, HUK-Autowelt four, mobile.de and Autohero three each. Car dealers such as autohaus-ostmann.de and Autoland appear once each. Only 12 of the 40 mentions come from websites among the top five search results.

Most frequent sources in AI Overviews (mentions across 15 questions)

  • huk-autowelt.de4
  • mobile.de3
  • autohero.com3
  • finanztip.de2
  • verivox.de2

Conclusion: your inventory and your margin determine the campaign structure

Google Ads opens up a very large, purchase-ready search market for car dealers. The opportunity lies in combining local dealer relevance, specific vehicle inventory, make and model searches, the right price range, drive type, availability and a clear intent to buy or sell. Broad bids on "Auto kaufen" (buy a car) or "Gebrauchtwagen" (used car) tap only a small part of this potential.

Used cars and specific models form the foundation; local searches deliver particularly valuable contacts. Buying and financing are lucrative but significantly more expensive submarkets; electric vehicles offer growth and need flexible management. The more closely search query, ad and vehicle offer match, the less a dealer competes on cost per click and the more margin remains per vehicle sold.
