Market analysis

Market analysis: Google Ads for family lawyers

Key takeaways
  • In family law, there are almost 300,000 searches a month; “anwalt familienrecht” (family lawyer) alone reaches around 14,800.
  • Demand is seasonal: March is the strongest month with 347,760 searches, December the weakest with 246,800.
  • Top-of-page bids for the most important terms range from €3.71 to €6.39, lower than in employment law.
  • Success depends above all on excluding other areas of law, dedicated landing pages, call options, and a tight local radius.

Many family law firms win their mandates mainly through recommendations from satisfied clients. But if you want to grow in a targeted way, focus more on divorce mandates, or build up a new location, recommendations alone will not get you far enough. Google Ads reaches people at exactly the moment they are looking for a lawyer.

We analyzed the German search market for family law. The data shows how large demand is, when it rises, what a click costs, and which settings help your firm avoid wasted spend.

In family law, almost 300,000 people search for advice every month

The data does not confirm the concern that people online are mainly looking for a quick guide.

  • The market records almost 300,000 searches per month in family law.
  • General search terms such as “anwalt familienrecht” or “scheidungsanwalt” (divorce lawyer) alone account for tens of thousands of queries from people who urgently need legal assistance.

Demand rises after New Year and after the summer holidays

Family law searches per month
  • March (peak)347,760
  • September326,010
  • January307,350
  • December (low)246,800

Separations follow recognizable patterns over the year:

  • New Year effect (January to March): After the holidays, many people come to the decision to separate. With 347,760 searches, March is the strongest month of the year.
  • Post-summer-holiday effect (September): A shared vacation is often followed by a visit to a lawyer (326,010 searches).
  • December: Before the holidays, search volume drops to the annual low of 246,800 searches.

So plan your budget by season. We recommend increasing the Google Ads budget by 20% to 30% in January, March, and September so your firm is visible exactly when the decision to make a change is made.

Costs per click in family law are in good proportion to the value of a mandate

Legal topics are among the more competitive industries in Google Ads. In family law, however, prices are significantly lower than in other areas of law such as employment or business law.

Certified specialist lawyer (fachanwalt familienrecht) ~6.600 0,96–5,14 €
Maintenance and custody (unterhalt anwalt) ~11,150 total 0,86–3,71 €
Top-of-page bid limit per category

With an average cost per click of €3.50 to €6.00 and a well-optimized law firm website, in our experience about 10 to 15 clicks lead to a concrete first inquiry. Measured against the value of a divorce mandate, that is an economical investment. For comparison: in employment law, even the general lawyer terms reach top-of-page bids of €10 to €13, as our market analysis for employment law shows.

Consistent exclusions protect your budget from wasted spend

The most common reason law firms are dissatisfied with Google Ads is wasted spend caused by imprecise settings. If you set keywords to broad match and give Google free rein, you quickly pay for clicks that never lead to a mandate.

An example: the keyword “fachanwalt berufsunfähigkeit” (specialist lawyer for disability) reaches top prices of up to €24.92 per click. If your family law campaign is set up imprecisely, Google may also show your ads for such searches. A single wrong click then costs as much as five relevant clicks on divorce terms.

Your negative keyword list should therefore include:

  • Other areas of law: inheritance law, employment law, criminal law, traffic law. Combinations such as “anwalt familien und erbrecht” (family and inheritance lawyer) often appear in the data set.
  • Searches for free offers and forms: “kostenlos,” “gratis,” “Prozesskostenhilfe Rechner” (legal aid calculator), “PDF Formular.”
  • Career searches: salary, vocational training, university studies, job openings.

Four levers to align your campaign with mandates

Separate informational searches from mandate searches

Distinguish consistently between people who are informing themselves and people who want to hire a lawyer:

  • “wie wird trennungsunterhalt berechnet” (how is separation maintenance calculated) is an informational search with a low conversion rate.
  • “scheidungsanwalt in der nähe” (divorce lawyer near me) or “fachanwalt für familienrecht” (certified family law specialist) show concrete interest in a mandate with a high conversion rate.

One law firm appears in almost every second AI Overview

We searched 15 typical questions on Google, for example “was kostet eine scheidung” (what does a divorce cost), “wie wird trennungsunterhalt berechnet,” or “umgangsrecht vater” (father's visitation rights) (query on October 22, 2026). For all 15 questions, an AI Overview appears above the search results.

The AI Overviews name 25 different websites in 40 mentions. A single law firm, kanzlei-hasselbach.de, appears in 7 of the 15 AI Overviews, for example for “brauche ich einen anwalt für die scheidung” (do I need a lawyer for the divorce) and “wie lange dauert eine scheidung” (how long does a divorce take). At least seven of the 25 websites are recognizable as law firms by their names. Alongside them are guides such as Finanztip (four mentions) and scheidung.org (three).

How we build content for AI Overviews is described on our page about GEO.

A dedicated landing page for every topic

Someone searching for “Scheidungsanwalt” (divorce lawyer) should land on a page about divorce, not on a general homepage of the firm. A good landing page:

  • shows understanding for the situation and names clear next steps,
  • briefly and approachably introduces you or the responsible specialist lawyer,
  • offers a simple way to make first contact.

Enable calls directly from search

Someone who is emotionally distressed and searching for a separation lawyer does not want to fill out long forms, often not on a smartphone either. With call assets, people seeking advice can call your firm directly from Google Search.

Draw the radius tightly around the firm's location

Family law is a local business. Limit the delivery of your ads to your firm's location and the surrounding districts, for example a radius of 20–30 km. Hardly anyone travels 200 kilometers for an uncontested divorce. We describe how we build campaigns for law firms overall in Google Ads for lawyers.

Conclusion: plan budget by season and exclude unsuitable searches

In family law, Google Ads follows clear numbers. Demand is large at almost 300,000 searches a month, rises in January, March, and September, and falls in December. Costs per click are significantly lower than in other areas of law.

If you use the seasonal peaks, consistently exclude unsuitable search terms, and lead people seeking advice to specialized landing pages, your budget flows into searches for legal help in family law.
