- “Anwalt für Arbeitsrecht” (employment lawyer) reaches around 14,800 searches per month, specialist lawyer terms 4,400 and 2,900 (July 2025 to June 2026).
- With around 2,900 monthly searches, Berlin is the largest regional market, ahead of Munich (1,900), Frankfurt (1,300), Stuttgart and Cologne (880 each).
- Dismissal, severance, termination agreement and employer advice have little volume but are very close to a client inquiry.
- The most realistic entry opportunities are in specialized problem, target group and location topics; the main terms are long-term goals.
We measured the organic search market for employment law firms in Germany for the period from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. We analyzed search volume, competition, regional demand and monthly fluctuations.
The analysis shows how large the market is nationwide and in the major cities, which topics are closest to a client inquiry and what a firm needs for top-3 rankings. How the same market looks in Google Ads is shown in our market analysis Google Ads for employment lawyers.
We analyze representative search terms and market segments
Many similar search terms belong to the same or a strongly overlapping search cluster. We therefore did not add up the volumes, but analyzed them based on representative search terms and thematic market segments.
The assessment of what is needed for top-3 rankings is a qualitative SEO estimate. It is based on search volume, search intent, local or nationwide focus, degree of specialization and the typical strength of competing law firm and information offerings.
Nationwide, tens of thousands of people look for legal help in employment law every month
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| anwalt für arbeitsrecht | 14.800 | High |
| arbeitsrecht anwalt | 8.100 | High |
| anwalt arbeitsrecht | 6.600 | Medium |
| rechtsanwalt arbeitsrecht | 6.600 | Medium |
| fachanwalt arbeitsrecht | 4.400 | Medium |
| fachanwalt für arbeitsrecht | 2.900 | Medium |
| rechtsanwalt für arbeitsrecht | 2.400 | High |
| kanzlei arbeitsrecht | 480 | Medium |
The largest single search term reaches around 14,800 searches per month. In addition, there are extensive demand clusters for attorneys, specialist lawyers and specialized employment law firms.
The values must not be added together. Terms such as “anwalt für arbeitsrecht”, “arbeitsrecht anwalt” and “anwalt arbeitsrecht” overlap strongly, and Google partly assigns them to the same search market. Nevertheless, the data shows that nationwide, tens of thousands of searches with a direct or indirect connection to employment law advice take place every month.
The specialist lawyer search is a separate, particularly competitive market
With 4,400 and 2,900 monthly searches respectively, specialist lawyer (Fachanwalt) terms form a market of their own. People searching this way don't want just any attorney, but explicitly:
- a specialization in employment law,
- professional experience,
- a specialist lawyer title (Fachanwalt),
- a firm focused on employment law.
The specialist lawyer search is therefore one of the most attractive, but also most competitive areas of the organic market.
Local searches are closest to a client inquiry
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| anwalt für arbeitsrecht in der nähe | 2.400 | High |
| rechtsanwalt für arbeitsrecht in der nähe | 1.300 | High |
| anwalt arbeitsrecht in der nähe | 1.000 | High |
| fachanwalt für arbeitsrecht in der nähe | 590 | High |
| arbeitsrecht anwalt in meiner nähe | 260 | Medium |
Local searches form a distinct, high-volume market. Even the largest “near me” term reaches around 2,400 searches per month. People searching this way don't want information on employment law, but a contact person they can reach. Closeness to a client inquiry is correspondingly high.
For these searches, law firms compete at the same time for:
- the organic search results,
- the Google Business Profile,
- placement in the Local Pack,
- reviews and local reputation.
Even a single major city supports its own organic market
| City | Representative search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berlin | anwalt arbeitsrecht berlin | 2.900 | High |
| Munich | anwalt arbeitsrecht münchen | 1.900 | Medium |
| Frankfurt | anwalt arbeitsrecht frankfurt | 1.300 | High |
| Stuttgart | anwalt arbeitsrecht stuttgart | 880 | High |
| Cologne | arbeitsrecht anwalt köln | 880 | High |
Berlin is the largest regional market examined. Munich follows at a clear distance, Frankfurt forms a medium-sized local market. Stuttgart and Cologne are at a comparable level for the largest search cluster.
- Berlin: around 2,900 searches per month for the central local term. The market is large but highly competitive: specialized firms, larger law firm teams and established local providers compete for the most visible positions.
- Munich: around 1,900 searches per month. Here, too, competition from specialized and established employment law firms is high.
- Frankfurt: around 1,300 searches per month. Demand is lower than in Berlin and Munich, but the organic potential remains considerable.
- Stuttgart and Cologne: around 880 searches per month each. Competition for the top three positions is high, but more realistic to reach for established local specialist firms than in Berlin or Munich.
Dismissal protection brings little volume but urgent inquiries
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| anwalt kündigung | 480 | Medium |
| kündigung rechtsanwalt | 170 | Medium |
| anwalt kündigungsschutzklage | 110 | High |
| anwalt bei kündigung | 90 | Medium |
| kündigungsschutzklage anwalt | 90 | Medium |
The dismissal market has less search volume than the general lawyer search, but the searches are particularly close to a mandate. Searches around the unfair dismissal lawsuit in particular often arise in an acute situation: people are looking for concrete support, not a general explanation.
In addition, there are numerous informational questions, for example on deadlines for an unfair dismissal lawsuit, the validity of a dismissal, dismissal for operational, conduct-related or summary reasons, dismissal during illness or the probationary period, and dismissal and severance. These informational terms expand the SEO market well beyond the lawyer-specific search terms.
For severance, the explicit search for advice is what counts
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| abfindung anwalt | 170 | Medium |
| anwalt für abfindung | 170 | Medium |
| abfindung beratung | 50 | High |
| rechtsanwalt abfindung | 20 | Medium |
The search market for legal support with severance is comparatively small, but shows a clear intent to seek advice and negotiate.
Informational interest in severance is considerably larger: amount of severance, severance calculator, severance after dismissal, taxes on severance, severance in a termination agreement, negotiating severance. For law firms, what counts most are the searches that explicitly mention advice or legal support.
With a termination agreement, the decision is usually already on the table
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| aufhebungsvertrag beratung | 140 | Medium |
| aufhebungsvertrag anwalt | 110 | Medium |
| anwalt aufhebungsvertrag | 70 | Medium |
The termination agreement forms a small, clearly defined submarket. Searches often arise when a draft contract or an offer from the employer is already on the table.
Relevant subtopics are: having a termination agreement reviewed, the blocking period for unemployment benefits, severance in the termination agreement, revocation or contesting, garden leave, remaining vacation, non-compete clauses and wording in the employment reference. The search is smaller than for dismissal topics, but close to a concrete decision to seek advice.
For warnings, only part of the volume relates to employment law
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| abmahnung | 12.100 | Low |
| abmahnung widerspruch | 720 | Medium |
| abmahnung anwalt | 110 | Medium |
| anwalt abmahnung | 90 | Medium |
With 12,100 monthly searches, “Abmahnung” (formal warning) is one of the highest-volume terms in the data set. However, the term is ambiguous: besides employment law, it also concerns competition law, copyright law, trademark law and tenancy law. The high volume is therefore not entirely a reachable market for an employment law firm.
Relevant are mainly searches with a clear employment law reference, such as “Abmahnung Arbeitsrecht”, “Abmahnung Arbeitnehmer”, “Abmahnung vom Arbeitgeber”, “gegen Abmahnung vorgehen”, “Abmahnung aus Personalakte entfernen” or “Anwalt bei Abmahnung”.
Employment contracts and references form small niches close to a mandate
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| anwalt arbeitszeugnis | 90 | Medium |
| arbeitszeugnis anwalt | 90 | Medium |
| anwalt arbeitsvertrag | 50 | High |
| arbeitsvertrag prüfen anwalt | 10 | High |
The lawyer-specific search volumes are low, but the terms show a concrete intent to seek advice or have something reviewed.
The overall topic area is much larger: employment contract review, fixed-term employment contract, non-compete clause, overtime rules, exclusion periods, variable pay and bonus agreements, employment reference review, unfavorable reference wording and having an employment reference corrected. These specialist topics add many niches close to a mandate to the large search fields.
Employers search less often, but more specifically
| Search term | Searches per month | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| anwalt für arbeitgeber | 170 | Medium |
| anwalt arbeitgeber | 170 | Medium |
| anwalt arbeitsrecht arbeitgeber | 110 | Medium |
| rechtsanwalt für arbeitgeber | 40 | Medium |
The employer market has significantly less search volume than the employee market. But it forms a distinct B2B market with a clear intent to seek advice, for example on legally sound dismissals, warnings to employees, employment contracts, managing director and executive contracts, works council issues, restructuring, variable pay, compliance and ongoing employment law advice.
Low search volume here does not mean low potential. Companies search very specifically and in concrete operational situations.
Search intent determines the value of a segment
| Market segment | Search volume | Closeness to a client inquiry |
|---|---|---|
| General search for employment lawyers | Very high | High |
| Local lawyer search | High | Very high |
| Specialist lawyer search | High | Very high |
| Dismissal and protection against dismissal | Medium | Very high |
| Severance pay | Low to medium | Very high |
| Termination agreement | Low to medium | Very high |
| Warnings in general | Very high | Low to medium |
| Formal warning with lawyer | Low | Very high |
| Employment contract and employment reference | Low | High |
| Employer advice | Low | Very high |
The largest search volume is not automatically the most attractive segment. General informational terms bring reach but are often far from a client inquiry. Small search clusters, by contrast, often contain a very concrete intent to seek advice.
Searches that contain at least one of these elements are particularly valuable: lawyer or attorney, specialist lawyer, a city or region, a concrete problem situation, review or advice, employer or employee.
For top-3 rankings, your firm needs content, authority and mentions
The following values are rough planning figures, not fixed minimums. The strength needed always depends on the competitors currently ranking.
Nationwide main terms
For top-3 rankings for terms such as “anwalt für arbeitsrecht” or “fachanwalt arbeitsrecht”, you typically need:
- employment law as the domain's clear professional focus,
- roughly 40 to 80 high-quality, thematically connected expert pages,
- detailed service pages for the most important employment law topics,
- verifiable specialist lawyer titles and author profiles,
- clear information on experience and specialization,
- strong internal linking,
- numerous mentions and links from trustworthy websites,
- an established reputation of the firm,
- ongoing updates of the most important content.
As a rough planning figure, a strong domain with roughly 100 to 250 referring domains may be needed. The quality and topical relevance of the links matter more than their number.
Major city terms
For top-3 rankings in Berlin, Munich or similarly competitive cities, you typically need:
- an established employment law firm at the actual location,
- a dedicated, comprehensive location page,
- at least 25 to 50 relevant expert and service pages,
- a fully maintained Google Business Profile,
- consistent firm, address and contact details,
- local mentions and links,
- numerous genuine client reviews,
- professional and local reputation,
- roughly 60 to 150 referring domains as a rough planning figure.
Medium-sized local markets
In Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart and comparable markets, top-3 rankings are more realistic. Typical requirements:
- a clear local reference,
- a specialized employment law positioning,
- 20 to 40 high-quality expert pages,
- a strong local service page,
- roughly 30 to 100 referring domains,
- local industry and press mentions,
- an active Google Business Profile,
- a relevant number of genuine reviews.
Problem-related main terms
For terms such as “anwalt kündigung”, “abfindung anwalt” or “aufhebungsvertrag anwalt”, you typically need:
- a dedicated, detailed service page,
- a complete topic cluster with about 8 to 20 supporting articles,
- clear professional authorship,
- suitable internal linking,
- concrete answers to the searchers' most important questions,
- roughly 20 to 80 referring domains at domain level,
- some topically relevant links or mentions for the central page.
Specialized long-tail terms
For terms such as “arbeitsvertrag prüfen anwalt” or “anwalt arbeitszeugnis”, lower requirements may be enough:
- an expert page precisely aligned with the search intent,
- five to ten supporting pieces of content,
- clearly recognizable legal expertise,
- clean internal linking,
- a generally trustworthy law firm domain,
- few but topically relevant external mentions.
Local top positions also need a profile and reviews
For local searches, a distinction must be made between the organic results and the Local Pack. For high local visibility, what counts most is:
- a real, verified firm address in the target area,
- a fully maintained Google Business Profile with correct opening hours and contact details,
- a clear association with employment law,
- a substantial location page,
- local mentions and links,
- a steady stream of new, genuine reviews,
- complete and consistent firm information,
- local reputation.
As a rough guide:
| Market | Rough planning figure |
|---|---|
| Berlin and Munich | often 50–150 or more genuine reviews and a strongly established local presence |
| Frankfurt, Cologne and Stuttgart | often 30–100 genuine reviews and strong local and professional authority |
| smaller cities | often 15–50 reviews and a clearly above-average local website |
The number of reviews alone does not determine the ranking. What matters is the combination of location, relevance, the firm's reputation, professional authority and trust.
In AI search, the same professional credibility counts
Many of the informational questions in this market, for example on notice periods, the amount of severance or the blocking period after a termination agreement, are exactly the questions that AI Overviews, Google's AI Mode or ChatGPT answer directly. For Google Search, according to Google's guide to AI search: optimizing for these answers is still SEO; no special formats are needed.
For law firms, this means: those who already convince in classic search with verifiable authorship, specialist lawyer titles and thorough expert pages also have better chances of being cited as a source in AI answers.
The fastest opportunities are in specialized topics
Most realistic in the short term
- arbeitsvertrag prüfen anwalt,
- anwalt arbeitszeugnis,
- rechtsanwalt abfindung,
- anwalt aufhebungsvertrag,
- anwalt für arbeitgeber,
- local long-tail searches,
- concrete combinations of problem and city.
Realistic in the medium term
- anwalt kündigung,
- abfindung anwalt,
- aufhebungsvertrag anwalt,
- kanzlei arbeitsrecht,
- specialist lawyer terms in medium-sized cities,
- regional dismissal and severance terms.
Long-term goals for authority
- anwalt für arbeitsrecht,
- arbeitsrecht anwalt,
- rechtsanwalt arbeitsrecht,
- fachanwalt arbeitsrecht,
- anwalt für arbeitsrecht in der nähe,
- anwalt arbeitsrecht berlin,
- anwalt arbeitsrecht münchen.
The main terms are long-term market goals. The faster opportunities are in specialized problem, target group and location clusters.
This is where the biggest opportunities lie
- High baseline demand: General lawyer searches reach five-digit monthly search volumes, a large and permanently relevant core market.
- Strong local demand: Major cities and “near me” searches form their own markets with concrete local intent.
- Pronounced specialist lawyer search: Several thousand people explicitly search for a specialist lawyer for employment law every month.
- Many problem situations: Dismissal, severance, termination agreement, warning, employment contract and employment reference each generate their own search clusters.
- Separate employer market: smaller than the employee segment, but a clearly defined B2B submarket.
- Reach and specialization at the same time: The market offers high-volume general terms and smaller, highly specialized searches with concrete intent to hire a lawyer.
How law firms use these opportunities with an SEO strategy is described in our article SEO for lawyers.
Conclusion: specialization and local visibility lead to mandates
The organic search market for employment law firms is large and diverse. The central term “anwalt für arbeitsrecht” reaches around 14,800 searches per month. With around 2,900 monthly searches, Berlin is the largest regional market examined, followed by Munich with 1,900, Frankfurt with 1,300 and Stuttgart and Cologne with around 880 each.
General lawyer searches bring the greatest reach; closest to a client inquiry are searches on dismissal protection, severance, termination agreements, employment contract review, warnings with legal support and employer advice. The main terms are highly competitive; top-3 rankings there require an established law firm domain, extensive expert content, verifiable expertise, strong internal linking and professional as well as local mentions. Through specialized topics, a firm builds step by step the authority it needs for the big terms.
