- The 100 largest search terms account for around 38.7% of the volume; most of the demand lies in the long tail of services, regions and specific questions.
- We see the greatest SEO potential in plumbing, roofing and heating, followed by tiling, carpentry and timber construction.
The trades market is one of the largest local search markets in Germany. Demand is spread across several thousand search terms from a wide range of trades, services and regions. Unlike in many industries, most of it lies in a very broad long tail with a clear intent to hire a business.
For this report, we analyzed 5,901 search terms, the same data basis as in our market analysis on Google Ads for tradespeople, this time with a view to organic search. It shows: visibility in the trades is not decided by big terms like “roofer” or “heating”. The biggest lever is offered by specialized service pages, regional landing pages and content built around specific customer questions.
We rate the SEO potential of the trades at 91 out of 100 points
Our SEO Market Score combines six criteria. The higher the value, the better the conditions for organic visibility that leads to inquiries. For competition, a high value means that conditions are favorable for new providers.
| Evaluation criterion | Score |
|---|---|
| Market size | 96 / 100 |
| Purchase intent | 94 / 100 |
| Local SEO potential | 98 / 100 |
| Long-tail potential | 95 / 100 |
| Competition | 71 / 100 |
| Content potential | 90 / 100 |
| Overall rating | 91 / 100 |
The combination of high regional demand, a large long-tail share and clear purchase intent makes the trades one of the most attractive SEO markets among local services.
The market comprises over 3.1 million searches per month
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Search terms analyzed | 5.901 |
| Search terms with search volume | 5.900 |
| Summed monthly search volume | 3.129.950 |
| Search terms with more than 100 searches | 3.164 |
| Search terms with more than 500 searches | 994 |
| Search terms with more than 1,000 searches | 609 |
| Search terms with more than 10,000 searches | 35 |
| Searches for local service providers | 133.350 |
| Highest top-of-page bid in Google Ads | 13,38 € |
The size of the market comes from thousands of searches for individual services, problems and regions. The volumes are rounded estimates from Google Keyword Planner; similar phrasings sometimes count the same demand, so the total slightly overestimates the market. The top-of-page bid shows what advertisers are willing to pay for a click, and thus how valuable a search is economically.
Demand is spread across almost all trades
| Trade or search term | Searches per month |
|---|---|
| Heating | 60.500 |
| Tiles | 60.500 |
| Roofers | 40.500 |
| Plumbing | 18.100 |
| Plumber | 18.100 |
| Tilers | 18.100 |
| Carpentry | 14.800 |
| Painter (vehicle and industrial) | 12.100 |
| Heating installers | 9.900 |
| Installer | 9.900 |
Even this overview shows that there is relevant demand for almost every trade. For trade businesses, this means: organic growth is possible in almost every specialty if the website describes the services the way customers search for them.
Search intent determines the value of a visitor
Not every search query has the same economic value. We distinguish seven demand groups:
| Search intent | Searches per month |
|---|---|
| Local service providers | 133.350 |
| Product and material search | 109.900 |
| Refurbishment and renovation | 38.090 |
| Costs and quotes | 21.230 |
| Training and careers | 18.700 |
| Companies and specialist businesses | 13.750 |
| Emergency services | 4.030 |
Searches with a clear service provider intent are particularly valuable: anyone making them is already looking for a trade business and is often about to get in touch. Product and material terms bring a lot of reach but rarely lead to a job.
Along the purchase decision, searches are distributed across four phases: getting informed, looking for a service, comparing providers and making contact. Among the clearly assignable searches, most are already in the phases where people are looking for a specific service or provider. This makes the trades much closer to purchase than many other industries.
Searches for a specific provider have the greatest SEO value
It's not the biggest search terms that bring the most customers. Search queries like these have the highest economic value:
- Plumbing near me
- Heating engineer near me
- Roofers nearby
- Plumber near me
- Water installer
- Plumbing company
- Heating company
- Roof renovation company
- Bathroom renovation company
- Emergency plumbing service
With these terms, the user is already looking for a provider. The probability that the visit turns into an inquiry is correspondingly high.
Most of the demand lies in the long tail
The 100 largest search terms account for around 38.7% of the combined volume, and the median of all search terms is 110 searches per month. More than 60% of demand is therefore spread across smaller terms and variants. Our Long-Tail Score is therefore 95 out of 100.
These smaller search queries often have:
- less competition,
- higher conversion rates,
- a stronger regional reference,
- a clearer search intent.
Regionally active businesses benefit most from this, because in these searches they aren't just up against large industry directories.
Local searches are the strongest lever in the trades
Our Local Intent Score is 98 out of 100. The share of local search queries is exceptionally high; phrasings like these are especially common:
- Roofers nearby
- Roofer near me
- Plumbing near me
- Plumber nearby
- Heating engineer near me
- Installer near me
- Painting company near me
- Carpentry nearby
Local search queries are among the most valuable terms of all, because anyone making them is no longer looking for information but for a business. How we build local visibility is shown on our page on local SEO.
Plumbing, roofing and heating offer the greatest potential
| Trade | Demand | Competition | SEO potential | SEO score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbing | High | Medium | 5 out of 5 | 96 |
| Roofers | High | Inexpensive | 5 out of 5 | 95 |
| Heating | High | Medium | 5 out of 5 | 94 |
| Tilers | High | Inexpensive | 4 out of 5 | 90 |
| Carpentry | Medium | Inexpensive | 5 out of 5 | 89 |
| Timber construction | Medium | Inexpensive | 4 out of 5 | 88 |
| Painters | Medium | Medium | 4 out of 5 | 84 |
| Glaziers | Medium | Inexpensive | 3 out of 5 | 76 |
Plumbing, roofing and heating combine large general and local demand with high economic value per inquiry. For tilers, solid service provider demand is set against a much larger market for products and DIY installation. Carpentry and timber construction offer good opportunities despite lower volume, because competition is weaker.
Service pages, local landing pages and emergency service pages are most in demand
The search terms clearly show which page types cover demand:
| Page type | Demand potential |
|---|---|
| Service pages | 5 out of 5 |
| Local landing pages | 5 out of 5 |
| Emergency service pages | 5 out of 5 |
| Cost and price guides | 4 out of 5 |
| Renovation guides | 4 out of 5 |
| Comparison pages | 4 out of 5 |
| FAQ | 4 out of 5 |
| Reference projects | 4 out of 5 |
The greatest opportunities therefore arise from a broad page structure with separate pages for individual services, regions and questions.
High advertising competition doesn't mean high organic competition
High search volume doesn't automatically mean strong competition in the organic results. The competition value in Keyword Planner measures competition among advertisers. Many general terms are hotly contested there, while organic ranking chances are often good, especially for regional searches.
Particularly interesting are:
- Carpentry
- Timber construction
- Roofers
- Plumbing business
- Installer
- Bathroom renovation
Here, high demand meets comparatively good opportunities to build organic visibility.
Questions about costs, funding and process often go unanswered
In almost all trades, certain topics are in high demand but rarely answered well. Content on the following has particular potential:
- costs and prices,
- funding programs,
- the process and duration of a renovation or individual jobs,
- material comparisons,
- before-and-after examples,
- checklists and common mistakes,
- maintenance and the question of repair or replacement.
With such content, you reach customers early in their decision, often before they even compare businesses.
Seasonal content must be online months before demand
Depending on the trade, demand fluctuates strongly over the year. Heating, roofing work, roof cleaning and roof coating are particularly seasonal: “Heizung” (heating) reaches 135,000 searches in January and 27,100 in May; “Dachreinigung” (roof cleaning) 5,400 in March and 2,400 in November. Plumbing, installers and bathroom renovation are searched comparatively evenly.
New pages need time to rank. Seasonal content should therefore be published several months before peak demand begins.
We build your visibility in the trades with ten levers
From the analysis, we derive ten measures with particularly strong impact:
- Service pages for every core service
- Regional landing pages for all relevant locations and catchment areas
- Cost and price guides
- Content on renovation and modernization
- Content on funding programs and grants
- FAQ and knowledge sections
- Reference projects with your own images and case examples
- Emergency service and immediate help pages
- A well-maintained Google Business Profile with locally targeted landing pages; more on this in our tips on the Business Profile
- Internal linking along the purchase decision
Conclusion: In the trades, those who consistently cover services and regions win
The analysis of 5,901 search terms with around 3.13 million searches per month shows that the trades are among the most attractive local SEO markets in Germany. Demand is spread across an exceptionally broad long tail of thousands of service- and location-related search queries, and many of them already show a clear intent to make contact.
Businesses that consistently build their website around individual services, regions and customer questions create the foundation for lasting visibility and predictable inquiries. We see the greatest potential in plumbing, heating, roofing, tiling, carpentry and timber construction. With an SEO Market Score of 91 out of 100, the trades offer very good conditions for organic growth. You can find more about our work for trade businesses on our page on construction & trades.
