Google Ads for tradespeople: how to get more jobs predictably

Many customers search for tradespeople on Google first. They enter terms like “tradesman near me”, “tradesman wanted”, “painter wanted”, “electrician cost” or “find a tradesman”. At that moment they already have a concrete need; you do not have to create it first.

Our keyword data shows the potential: in the analyzed keyword set around trade topics there are over 121,000 average monthly searches. A large share comes from users who are looking for a tradesperson, comparing providers or want to commission a service. We show how to turn this demand into jobs with the right campaign structure, matching ads and landing pages.

Local searches show the clearest need for a job

The local reference is especially important. “Tradesman near me” reaches 3,600 monthly searches and shows a clear intent: the user is not looking for advice but for a business in their area.

Not every search has the same meaning. For successful Google Ads, keyword, ad and landing page must match the search intent. We distinguish four groups of searchers.

Customers with an acute need

These users search directly for a provider, for example with “tradesman wanted”, “find a tradesman”, “search for a tradesman”, “tradesman near me”, “tradesman nearby” or “tradesman wanted private”. They are often just about to get in touch and want to find a suitable business quickly.

Google Ads is particularly strong for tradespeople because the channel does not pay into attention but into existing demand. Anyone searching for “tradesman wanted”, “painter nearby” or “electrician for small jobs” usually has no abstract interest but a concrete problem. That is exactly why campaigns in the trades must not be built too broadly.

Customers with a specific trade

Many users already know which trade they need: “painter wanted”, “painter and decorator nearby”, “electrician wanted private”, “roofer wanted”, “plumbing and heating tradesman”, “plumbing tradesman” or “looking for electrician for small jobs”. These keywords are suitable for specialized campaigns. Anyone looking for a painter should land on a landing page for painting work, not on a general tradesperson page.

Customers with smaller jobs

A large part of the demand concerns smaller tasks in the household or business: “looking for tradesman for small jobs”, “handyman”, “handyman nearby”, “tradesman for private household” or “small repairs tradesman”. This segment is interesting for handymen, caretaker services and businesses that also take on smaller jobs.

Customers with price interest

Users searching for “tradesman cost”, “painter cost”, “electrician cost”, “tradesman quote” or “tradesman prices” are often still in the comparison phase. But they are already dealing concretely with a job. Landing pages with price examples, cost factors and a simple quote request meet them where they are.

Six keyword segments make up the trades market

A successful campaign does not rely on a single keyword. Users search for general tradespeople, trades, local providers, costs and platforms.

Keyword segment Examples Significance for Google Ads
General tradesperson search tradesman, find a tradesman, tradesman wanted Broad demand with a high chance of inquiries
Local search tradesman near me, tradesman nearby Very strong local search intent
Trade search painter wanted, electrician wanted, roofer wanted High relevance for specialized businesses
Small jobs tradesman for small jobs, handyman Good for repairs and smaller jobs
Cost search painter cost, electrician cost, tradesman cost Users compare prices and offers
Portal search myhammer tradesman, check24 tradesman Users compare referral platforms

Some keywords combine high search volume with clear intent:

Keyword Avg. monthly searches Competition High-range top-of-page CPC
tradesman 18.100 Low 3,39 €
painter and decorator 8.100 Low 3,11 €
tradesman near me 3.600 Low 4,57 €
find a tradesman 2.900 High 2,36 €
trade businesses 2.400 Low 5,34 €
tradesman wanted 1.600 High 2,37 €
tradesman nearby 1.600 Medium 3,46 €
check24 tradesman 1.300 Medium 5,22 €
search for a tradesman 1.000 High 2,56 €
tradesman portal 1.000 Medium 3,47 €

The average high-range top-of-page CPC in the relevant search market is around €3. That is economically interesting if clicks turn into qualified inquiries and those into profitable jobs. You will find an analysis of over 5,900 search terms by trade in our market analysis Google Ads for tradespeople.

We separate your campaigns by search intent, trade and region

Do not throw all keywords into one campaign. With a split by search intent, trade and region, ad and landing page match the respective search, and you see which part of your budget brings jobs.

General tradesperson search

For users who are generally looking for a tradesperson, with keywords such as “tradesman wanted”, “find a tradesman”, “search for a tradesman”, “tradesman service” or “find a trade business”. Suitable for businesses with several services, handymen, regional service providers and referral models. Possible messages: “Reliable tradespeople in your region”, “Submit an inquiry now and receive a quote”, “Renovation, repair and refurbishment by a specialist business”, “Fast response and transparent quotes”.

Local tradesperson search

Local searches are especially valuable: “tradesman near me”, “tradesman nearby”, “tradesman [city]”, “tradesman wanted [city]”, “trade business [city]”. Important are the location reference in the ad, regional targeting in the account, separate landing pages for important cities or regions, a clearly visible phone number and form, and a well-maintained Google Business Profile.

Sample ad: “Looking for a tradesman in Stuttgart? Reliable help with renovation, repairs and smaller jobs. Submit an inquiry now and get a fast response.”

Campaigns by trade

If you offer specific services, create separate campaigns or ad groups for them, for example for “painter wanted”, “painter and decorator nearby”, “electrician wanted private”, “roofer wanted”, “plumbing tradesman”, “tiler wanted” or “tradesman to renew silicone joints”. That way you align ad and landing page exactly with the problem: anyone entering “painter wanted” sees an ad for painting work and lands on a painter landing page.

Small jobs and repairs

Many users are not looking for a large renovation company but for help with smaller tasks: “looking for tradesman for small jobs”, “handyman”, “handyman nearby”, “tradesman for small repairs”, “tradesman for private household”. Possible messages: “Small repairs too”, “Handyman for house and apartment”, “Assembly, repairs and touch-ups”, “Schedule a callback now”. This campaign pays off for businesses that specifically want to take on smaller jobs.

Cost and quote inquiries

Price-oriented users with searches such as “tradesman cost”, “painter cost”, “electrician cost”, “tradesman quote” or “tradesman prices” do not always decide right away, but are close enough to the topic for a later inquiry. Here the landing page should explain price factors, typical influencing variables and how a quote is prepared.

Exclusions keep your budget with potential customers

Without exclusions you quickly pay for irrelevant clicks. In the trades, many searches do not come from potential customers. Typical terms to exclude are:

  • Jobs, job openings, apprenticeship, salary, professions, master craftsman school
  • Invoice, writing an invoice, software, website for tradespeople
  • Finding jobs, subcontractors
  • Chamber of crafts, guild signs, primer

For other business models these terms can be relevant. For a business that wants to win end customers, they are wasted spend.

We derive your budget from your goal

The right budget depends on region, trade, competition and goal. Many relevant trade keywords have a high-range top-of-page bid between €2 and €5 per click.

So calculate backwards: how many qualified inquiries do you need per month, and what may an inquiry cost for the job to be profitable? Desired inquiries times sustainable cost per inquiry gives your monthly budget. One trade and one region with sufficient budget yield more insight than many campaigns with a few euros.

More important than the size of the budget is the interplay of campaign, keyword selection, ads, landing page and conversion tracking. A business with a €1,500 monthly budget and a strong landing page can achieve better results than a business with €5,000 that bids on overly broad keywords and sends users to a general homepage.

The landing page decides whether a click becomes a job

Many tradespeople lose most of their money not at the click, but afterward. The user lands on a general website, does not immediately find the right service and leaves.

A good tradesperson landing page turns visitors into qualified inquiries. It immediately answers: Am I in the right place? Does the business offer exactly this service? Does it work in my region? Can I trust it? How quickly will I get a response? How do I get in touch easily?

Many trade businesses focus too much on keywords and costs per click in Google Ads. The real lever, however, is often the landing page. When a user searches for “painter wanted” and then lands on a general homepage, friction arises immediately. The user has to find out for themselves whether the service, the region and the process fit.

The visible top section convinces in seconds

The first visible section contains a clear headline, a concrete service promise, the local reference, the most important call to action, phone number or callback option, a real photo and a trust element, such as reviews or a note that it is a master craftsman business.

Example: “Looking for a painter in Stuttgart? Professional painting work for apartments, houses and commercial spaces. Clean execution, transparent quotes and fast response.” Below that, two buttons: “Submit inquiry” and “Call now”.

Contact options are immediately visible

With tradesperson inquiries, speed counts, because many users contact several businesses at the same time. Show the phone number in the header, a fixed button on smartphones, a short form near the top, a callback option, email or WhatsApp if needed, and a note on response time. A good wording: “Briefly describe your project. We will get back to you quickly with an initial assessment.”

The form stays short

Every additional required field lowers the likelihood that users submit the form. Useful fields are name, phone number, email, town or postal code, desired service, a short description and an optional photo upload. Photos help with the assessment; as a required field they become a hurdle.

Services and service area are clearly named

Users want to recognize quickly whether their problem will be solved. A handyman, for example, lists small repairs, assembly and renovation work, touch-ups, silicone joints and furniture assembly. A painting business lists interior and facade painting, wallpapering, varnishing and filling work, move-out renovation and commercial painting work.

The service area belongs on the page just as clearly, for example: “We work in Stuttgart and the surrounding area: in Esslingen, Ludwigsburg, Böblingen, Fellbach and the surrounding region.” Separate pages for important cities increase the match between search, ad and landing page.

Trust comes from proof

Trade services are a matter of trust: customers let strangers into their apartment, house or business. Suitable are genuine customer reviews, photos of the team, before-and-after pictures, reference projects, a note that it is a master craftsman business, information on insurance, qualifications and warranty, and logos of guilds or certifications. Statements such as “highest quality” or “best service” are not enough. Trust comes from concrete proof.

Process and costs are transparent

A clear process removes uncertainty: send an inquiry, receive a response, agree on an appointment or quote, have the work carried out. Not every business has to publish fixed prices. But the page should explain what the costs depend on: type and scope of work, materials, travel, urgency, property size, on-site condition and necessary preparatory work.

Good ads are specific, local and geared toward the inquiry

Your ad must quickly show why the user should contact you in particular.

Campaign Ad headline Description
General tradesperson search Tradespeople near you · Request a tradesperson now · Fast help from a specialist business · Renovation & repair Looking for reliable tradespeople for renovation, repairs or smaller jobs? Submit an inquiry now and get a fast response.
Painting business Painters near you · Painting work by a specialist business · Have your apartment painted · Quote for painting work Professional painting work for apartments, houses and businesses. Describe your project now and request a quote.
Small jobs Tradesman for small jobs · Looking for a handyman? · Repairs done quickly · Schedule a callback now Whether assembly, repair or touch-up: reliable help with small jobs at home and in the business.

We measure every inquiry through to the job won

Google Ads can only be optimized if it is clear which clicks lead to inquiries. At a minimum, measure form inquiries, clicks on phone numbers, calls via ads, clicks on email addresses and WhatsApp, appointment bookings and quote requests.

It is even better to evaluate the quality of each inquiry: Was it relevant? Was it within the service area? Did the job fit the business? Was a quote prepared, the job won, and what revenue and contribution margin resulted? Only with this information do you see which keywords bring profitable customers. We describe how to feed this data back to Google Ads in the guide to conversion tracking.

Seven mistakes cost trade businesses the most inquiries

  • Sending all users to the homepage: Users need a page that exactly matches their search.
  • Keywords too broad: Anyone who only bids on “tradesman” gets very different searches. A structure by trade, region and search intent is better.
  • No exclusions: Terms such as jobs, apprenticeship, salary, invoice or software cause wasted spend.
  • Forms too long: Especially on smartphones, the form must be quick to fill out.
  • Hidden phone number: Many local users want to call directly. The number must be immediately visible and tappable on mobile.
  • No trust elements: Reviews, references, real photos and clear processes improve the conversion rate.
  • Only looking at costs per click: A cheap click is not automatically good. What matters is the cost per qualified inquiry and per job won.

We prepare your campaigns before peak season

Demand follows the season. It is particularly strong in spring and lower in December. From January it rises again and peaks in March. After winter, many customers plan renovations, repairs, modernizations and outdoor work.

For your campaigns this means:

  • December and January are suitable for preparation and tests.
  • From February, the budget is actively managed.
  • March to May are particularly important months.
  • Landing pages, tracking and ads are ready before peak season.

Anyone who only starts when demand peaks loses valuable inquiries. How strongly the season fluctuates by trade is shown in our market analysis.

Google Ads brings fast visibility: for quick inquiries, new regions, seasonal demand, specific services, keyword tests and short-term capacity utilization. SEO ensures organic reach in the long term: with service pages, city pages, guides as well as cost and FAQ topics. For local visibility, local SEO is also worthwhile.

Use your Google Ads data for SEO. If certain search terms bring many good inquiries, you should build organic pages for them, such as “Tradesman in [city]”, “Painter in [city]”, “Electrician for small jobs in [city]” or “Cost of painting work”.

The same applies to AI search. Today customers also ask their questions in Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google itself says that optimizing for this is still SEO: special structured data or an llms.txt file are not necessary. Good service and city pages therefore help you twice: in classic search and in AI answers.

Conclusion: we make your customer acquisition with Google Ads predictable

Google Ads is one of the most direct routes to new customer inquiries in the trades. The demand is there, many searches are local, and users often have a concrete need.

The decisive success factor is the combination of keyword strategy, ad message and matching landing page. Anyone who meets users according to their actual search intent, shows local relevance, builds trust and makes getting in touch easy turns Google Ads from an advertising cost item into a predictable system for new customers.

Alex Sperber, Partner at UnitedAds

The most important rule: every ad leads to a page that exactly matches the search. Anyone looking for a painter needs a painter landing page. Anyone looking for a tradesperson nearby needs a local landing page. Anyone researching costs needs transparent information and a simple quote request. When keywords, ads, landing page and measurement work together, Google Ads becomes a predictable system for more inquiries and better capacity utilization.

We answer the most common questions from trade businesses

What does Google Ads cost for tradespeople?

That depends on region, competition, trade and campaign structure. In our keyword data, many relevant costs per click for the high-range top-of-page bid are between €2 and €5. The budget follows from the number of inquiries you need and the cost an inquiry can bear.

Is Google Ads worthwhile with a small budget too?

Yes, if region, keywords and landing page are clearly narrowed down. Local searches such as “tradesman near me”, “painter wanted” or “electrician wanted private” are particularly suitable.

Which keywords work particularly well for tradespeople?

Keywords with clear inquiry intent, such as “tradesman wanted”, “find a tradesman”, “tradesman near me”, “painter wanted”, “electrician wanted private” and “tradesman for small jobs”.

Does a trade business need its own landing page for Google Ads?

Usually, yes. A dedicated landing page exactly matches the search, explains the service, builds trust and makes getting in touch easy. A general homepage rarely achieves this.

When is the best time for Google Ads in the trades?

Demand is particularly strong in spring. So prepare campaigns, landing pages and tracking before peak season and actively ramp up the campaigns from January and February.
