- We analyzed 3,793 search terms, including around 932 commercially relevant lawyer terms with a combined total of about 559,450 searches a month (July 2025 to June 2026).
- With 198,540 searches, family law is the largest area, followed by inheritance, traffic, employment, and criminal law.
- The median of the top-of-page bid estimates is €6.72; only six of 767 terms reach €100 or more, mainly in tax and white-collar criminal law.
- The decisive management metric is advertising cost per accepted and economically relevant mandate.
For law firms, Google Ads is one of the most interesting and at the same time most demanding channels for winning clients. Anyone searching for an “employment lawyer,” a “criminal defense lawyer,” or a “certified specialist in inheritance law” usually has a concrete problem that needs to be solved soon. This closeness to hiring makes the market attractive. But it also means that, for lucrative mandates, law firms compete for the best ad positions with specialized competitors, legal tech providers, legal expenses insurers, and supra-regional law firm brands.
Our analysis is based on 3,793 search terms with search volume, competition, bid ranges, and monthly values for the period July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. It shows: costs per click of more than €100 are real, but by no means the norm. Most of the economically relevant search market is well below that. What matters is therefore prioritizing search queries by mandate value, likelihood of closing, and professional fit.
Five areas of law drive demand, at very different prices
For the comparison, we grouped the commercially oriented search terms by area of law. The gross keyword volume includes similar phrasings and is therefore not a count of unique users. But it clearly shows in which areas of law there are particularly many search variants and mandate inquiries.
| Area of law | Gross keyword volume | Weighted top-of-page bid | Market character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family law and divorce | 198.540 | 5,80 € | Very large volume, moderate CPC |
| Inheritance law | 79.530 | 7,86 € | High demand, good specialization |
| Traffic law | 76.610 | 9,92 € | High urgency, strong competition |
| Employment law | 74.480 | 11,75 € | Large demand, particularly competitive |
| Criminal law | 70.160 | 13,05 € | Close to hiring, high urgency |
| IT and data protection law | 10.090 | 9,52 € | Small, specialized B2B/B2C market |
| Tax law | 5.880 | 50,34 € | Small volume, very high mandate value |
| White-collar and tax criminal law | 1.500 | 60,51 € | Highly specialized and high-priced |
Family law is the largest area of demand
Family law and divorce form by far the largest area of the keyword portfolio. Combinations of area of law and clear intent to hire a lawyer are particularly strong:
- “Anwalt für Familienrecht”: 14,800 searches
- “Anwalt Familienrecht”: 12,100 searches
- “Familienrecht Anwalt”: 12,100 searches
- “Fachanwalt für Familienrecht”: 5,400 searches
- “Scheidungsanwalt”: 4,400 searches
The many similar variants show that people seeking advice do not use a uniform phrasing. A campaign with only one or two main keywords misses a considerable part of demand.
With a weighted top-of-page bid of about €5.80, family law is relatively inexpensive compared to employment, criminal, or tax law. Some of the most common main terms have declined by around 18 percent year over year. This does not necessarily mean the market is shrinking: demand is spreading more across specific subtopics, local searches, and qualitative phrasings such as “Bester Anwalt für Familienrecht” (best family lawyer), “Guter Anwalt für Familienrecht” (good family lawyer), “Familienrecht Anwalt in der Nähe” (family lawyer near me), or “Anwalt für Scheidung und Familienrecht” (divorce and family lawyer). People seeking advice therefore pay attention to perceived quality, specialization, and proximity. Details on seasonality and costs per click are in our market analysis for family law.
Inheritance law combines stable volume with good profitability
Inheritance law combines a relatively large search volume with moderate bid estimates:
- “Anwalt für Erbrecht”: 8,100 searches
- “Fachanwalt für Erbrecht”: 5,400 searches
- “Anwalt für Erbrecht in der Nähe”: 2,400 searches
- “Fachanwalt für Erbrecht in der Nähe”: 1,000 searches
“Fachanwalt für Erbrecht” is growing by around 50 percent year over year, and “Fachanwalt für Erbrecht in der Nähe” is even around 171 percent above the previous year's level. Search is shifting from general information to concrete selection and hiring.
For specialized law firms, inheritance law is therefore particularly interesting. Costs per click are lower than in employment or criminal law, while complex estate disputes, compulsory share claims, and business succession can reach considerable mandate values.
Traffic law is large and event-driven
Traffic law reaches a gross keyword volume of around 76,610 searches:
- “Anwalt für Verkehrsrecht”: 8,100 searches
- “Rechtsanwalt für Verkehrsrecht”: 5,400 searches
- “Anwalt Verkehrsrecht”: 4,400 searches
- “Verkehrsanwalt”: 1,300 searches
Top-of-page bid estimates for the large main terms are mostly between ten and twelve euros. For urgent subtopics, they rise significantly; “Anwalt für Bußgeld” (lawyer for traffic fines), for example, reaches around €33.40.
After an accident, a threatened driving ban, or a fine notice, those affected usually look for support immediately. A fast response, availability by phone, and a clear statement on the specific case therefore carry more weight than a general presentation of the firm.
Employment law is one of the most competitive volume markets
| Keyword | Searches per month | Competition | Bid range |
|---|---|---|---|
| anwalt für arbeitsrecht | 14.800 | High | 3,32–12,22 € |
| arbeitsrecht anwalt | 8.100 | High | 3,39–12,57 € |
| anwalt arbeitsrecht | 6.600 | Medium | 3,82–12,78 € |
| rechtsanwalt arbeitsrecht | 6.600 | Medium | 3,31–12,14 € |
The general topic “Arbeitsrecht” (employment law) has grown by 124 percent year over year and by 50 percent within three months. The directly commercial search “Anwalt für Arbeitsrecht” is stable year over year and has risen by around 22 percent within three months.
So more informational demand does not automatically lead to proportionally more mandate inquiries. But it enlarges the group of people dealing with dismissal, severance pay, employment contracts, or termination agreements. Searches in which the conflict is already apparent are particularly profitable: unfair dismissal claims, severance after dismissal, reviewing a termination agreement, redundancy dismissal, summary dismissal, and dismissal during the probationary period. Some of them have less volume than “Anwalt für Arbeitsrecht,” but they can have a higher likelihood of closing. Our market analysis for employment law shows the submarkets in detail.
Criminal law has high urgency and above-average bids
- “Anwalt für Strafrecht”: 9,900 searches
- “Rechtsanwalt für Strafrecht”: 3,600 searches
- “Strafverteidiger”: 3,600 searches
- “Fachanwalt Strafrecht”: 880 searches
At around €13.05, the weighted top-of-page bid is higher than that of the other large areas of law. Individual offense and procedure terms are considerably more expensive still.
After a house search, summons, arrest, indictment, or penalty order, those affected need a concrete recommendation for action at short notice. Criminal law is therefore well suited to Google Ads, but it requires fast qualification of inquiries: not every contact leads to an economically viable mandate, and for certain search terms, need for advice and ability to pay are far apart. More in our market analysis for criminal defense lawyers.
With similar search volumes, bids differ by more than a factor of two
| Keyword | Searches per month | Competition | Bid range |
|---|---|---|---|
| anwalt für arbeitsrecht | 14.800 | High | 3,32–12,22 € |
| anwalt für familienrecht | 14.800 | Medium | 1,12–5,70 € |
| anwalt familienrecht | 12.100 | Medium | 1,27–6,39 € |
| anwalt für strafrecht | 9.900 | Medium | 3,63–13,47 € |
| arbeitsrecht anwalt | 8.100 | High | 3,39–12,57 € |
| anwalt für verkehrsrecht | 8.100 | High | 2,53–10,31 € |
| anwalt für erbrecht | 8.100 | Medium | 1,39–8,79 € |
| fachanwalt für erbrecht | 5.400 | Medium | 1,03–6,29 € |
| scheidungsanwalt | 4.400 | Medium | 1,87–6,58 € |
| strafverteidiger | 3.600 | Medium | 3,43–12,13 € |
There is a large core market with several thousand searches per term each month. At the same time, bids differ considerably despite similar volumes: a search for a family lawyer can cost less than half as much as a comparable search in criminal or employment law.
For a firm operating supra-regionally, the combination of practice area and lawyer term alone offers a lot of reach. Regionally operating firms have to scale the nationwide volume down to their actual catchment area.
Costs per click above €100 are the exception
The analysis only partly confirms the often-quoted claim that lawyer keywords generally cost €50, €80, or more than €100 per click. Across the cleaned commercial keywords, the top-of-page bid estimates are distributed as follows:
| Metric | Top-of-page bid |
|---|---|
| Median | 6,72 € |
| Volume-weighted average | 9,09 € |
| 75th percentile | 10,23 € |
| 90th percentile | 13,69 € |
| 95th percentile | 25,22 € |
| Maximum | 149,98 € |
Of 767 commercial keywords with bid data, 214 are at €10 or more, 71 at €15 or more, 54 at €20 or more, 21 at €50 or more, and six at €100 or more. Together, the very expensive terms account for only around 310 gross searches a month. They are relevant, but not representative of the lawyer market.
These keywords reach bid estimates above €100
| Keyword | Searches per month | Competition | Top-of-page bid |
|---|---|---|---|
| steuer fachanwalt | 20 | High | 149,98 € |
| fachanwalt wirtschaftsstrafrecht | 40 | Medium | 149,58 € |
| rechtsanwalt für wirtschaftsstrafrecht | 10 | Medium | 102,26 € |
| anwalt 184b | 20 | High | 101,27 € |
| strafbefreiende selbstanzeige steuerrecht | 30 | Medium | 101,24 € |
| wirtschaftsstrafrecht kanzlei | 110 | Medium | 100,94 € |
The values are the upper range of the bids estimated by the Keyword Planner for a top-of-page placement. They do not automatically correspond to the CPC actually paid. But they show where particularly high economic expectations exist: in tax criminal law, white-collar criminal law, specialized criminal defense, and certain tax law mandates.
A cost per click of €100 is hardly viable for a divorce mandate or a simple traffic matter. For a voluntary tax disclosure, an extensive white-collar criminal case, or a complex corporate mandate, the same price can be economically justifiable.
We manage by cost per accepted mandate
The cost per click alone says little about profitability. What matters is how many clicks turn into qualified inquiries. The following model calculation is not a forecast; it shows the relationship between CPC and conversion rate:
| Average CPC | CPL at 5% | CPL at 10% | CPL at 15% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 € | 120 € | 60 € | 40 € |
| 10 € | 200 € | 100 € | 67 € |
| 15 € | 300 € | 150 € | 100 € |
| 50 € | 1.000 € | 500 € | 333 € |
A firm that pays €10 per click and wins one inquiry from ten clicks arrives at a calculated cost per lead (CPL) of €100. If it needs 20 clicks for this, the cost doubles to €200.
After that, the mandate acceptance rate decides. If, for example, only 30 percent of inquiries become mandates, a CPL of €150 already corresponds to acquisition costs of €500 on average per mandate won. The central management metric is therefore the advertising cost per actually accepted and economically relevant mandate. Only this shows whether a campaign contributes to the firm's profit.
Informational searches and mandate searches belong apart
The entire keyword set reaches a calculated gross search volume of more than two million searches per month. A considerable part of this is accounted for by terms such as employee dismissal rights, inheritance tax, inheritance tax allowances, Berlin will (Berliner Testament), costs of a divorce, compulsory share in inheritance, employment contract, or severance pay.
These searches can lead to a mandate, but they are often still early in the information phase. Someone searching for “Erbschaftssteuer Freibeträge” (inheritance tax allowances) may just want to look up an amount. Someone entering “Fachanwalt für Erbrecht in der Nähe” wants to hire a lawyer. We therefore distinguish at least three levels:
Direct demand for a lawyer
Examples: employment lawyer, criminal defense lawyer, certified inheritance law specialist, divorce lawyer, traffic lawyer. These terms have high commercial intent and form the core of the campaign.
Problem-related demand
Examples: unfair dismissal claim, severance after dismissal, received a penalty order, claiming a compulsory share, objecting to a fine notice, filing for divorce. The problem is concrete, but the searcher does not yet mention a lawyer. These keywords can be very valuable but need messaging tailored precisely to the problem.
General informational demand
Examples: inheritance tax allowances, costs of a divorce, employee notice period, fixed-term employment contract, statutory order of succession. These terms bring large reach but usually convert much more weakly. They therefore get neither the same bid nor the same budget as clear lawyer inquiries.
Plan your budget by season
Across the cleaned commercial keyword portfolio, there is clear seasonality. The average monthly gross search volume is around 563,000 searches. In March, it rises to about 710,000, around 26 percent above average. December, at around 487,000, is about 13 percent below it. This puts March around 46 percent above December.
One possible explanation is the accumulation of employment, family, and tax law questions at the start of the year. But this does not mean every area of law peaks in March; the development must be checked per campaign and area of law.
Two consequences follow. The annual budget should not be rigidly divided by twelve. And budget caps should be adjusted in good time during phases of rising demand, so that a campaign is not throttled in the month of highest demand.
Local searches are gaining weight
Our data set does not contain a systematic selection of combinations with German cities. Reliable statements about individual cities or regions are not possible on this basis. What is clearly visible, though, is the growing importance of searches with “in der Nähe” or “in meiner Nähe” (near me):
| Search term | Searches per month | Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Fachanwalt für Erbrecht in der Nähe | 1.000 | around 171% |
| Anwalt für Erbrecht in der Nähe | 2.400 | around 81% |
| Familienrecht Anwalt in der Nähe | 1.600 | around 60% |
| Verkehrsanwalt in der Nähe | 390 | around 86% |
The exact growth rates of smaller keywords can fluctuate strongly because of the rounded Keyword Planner values. The direction is nevertheless clear: people seeking advice increasingly combine professional specialization with proximity.
For regionally operating firms, a nationwide keyword analysis is therefore only the first step. The actual market potential must also be determined for the state, city, district, and catchment radius.
Every area of law requires its own strategy
Volume-oriented areas of law
Family law, employment law, traffic law, and inheritance law offer the largest scalable demand. They suit firms that can regularly handle new mandates and have standardized processes for fast contact. The advantage is the large reach; the disadvantage is a sometimes considerable number of unsuitable or economically weak inquiries.
Urgency-oriented areas of law
Criminal law, traffic law, and parts of employment law benefit from time-critical situations: summons, penalty order, dismissal, or a threatened driving ban. High conversion rates are possible here, provided the firm is reachable at short notice and handles inquiries quickly.
Value-oriented areas of law
Tax law, tax criminal law, and white-collar criminal law have much less volume but considerably higher bids. They are less suited to broad lead generation than to the targeted acquisition of individual, high-priced mandates. A single new mandate can justify high advertising spend; imprecise keywords and weak qualification become particularly expensive here.
Specialized growth markets
IT law and data protection law do not yet reach the volume of the classic areas of law, but individual search terms have bid estimates of €20 and more. Demand comes from private individuals and companies with very different mandate values. B2B and B2C searches therefore belong in separate campaigns.
We build campaigns strictly by area of law and case type
A single campaign with all lawyer keywords does not fit this market. The differences in search intent, cost per click, mandate value, and urgency are too large.
Manage areas of law separately
Employment law, family law, criminal law, traffic law, and inheritance law need their own campaigns. Only then can budgets, bids, and economic targets be evaluated separately.
Separate general and specific search queries
“Anwalt für Arbeitsrecht” is evaluated separately from “Kündigungsschutzklage nach betriebsbedingter Kündigung” (unfair dismissal claim after redundancy). The first keyword describes the area of law, the second a specific case. Problem-related keywords often allow more precise messaging and better pre-qualification.
Isolate high-priced specialist terms
Tax criminal law, white-collar criminal law, capital markets law, and special terms from sexual criminal law must not run uncontrolled in general campaigns. Just a few clicks can consume a considerable part of the daily budget.
Control informational terms
Terms around definitions, laws, templates, calculators, university studies, vocational training, and free templates easily bring a lot of reach without corresponding mandate quality. We exclude them, limit them strongly, or serve them through a separate content strategy.
Map local demand separately
We evaluate searches with cities, city districts, counties, and “near me” separately from purely subject-related keywords. For local campaigns, what counts is where the searcher is located and which place they explicitly enter.
Five risks cost law firms the most budget
- Keyword coverage that is too broad: Broadly targeting terms such as “Arbeitsrecht,” “Erbrecht,” or “Familienrecht” can trigger large numbers of informational searches. The visible search volume is attractive but does not correspond to an equal number of mandates.
- No assessment of mandate quality: A campaign can deliver inexpensive inquiries on paper and still be unprofitable. What matters is whether the inquiries fall into the desired area of law, are accepted, and generate sufficient revenue.
- Overrating individual CPC estimates: The upper bid range is not a fixed cost per click. It shows how hard bidding is in certain auctions. The actual costs depend on location, ad quality, competition, time of day, and search query, among other things.
- Mixing different mandate values: A simple initial consultation and an extensive white-collar criminal case cannot be evaluated with the same target CPA. Uniform targets for the whole firm therefore often lead to wrong optimization decisions.
- Limited regional transferability: The keyword portfolio reflects nationwide demand. A firm in a smaller city cannot derive its local potential directly from it and needs an additional regional keyword analysis.
We describe how we build campaigns for law firms overall in Google Ads for lawyers.
Conclusion: what matters is which click you buy for which case
The German Google Ads market for lawyers is large, differentiated and attractive in principle. The keyword portfolio contains around 932 commercially relevant legal terms with a gross search volume of about 559,450 searches per month. Five practice areas shape the market: family law and divorce, inheritance law, traffic law, employment law and criminal law. For most relevant keywords, the typical top-of-page bid estimates range from about six to 14 euros. Cost per click of 50 or 100 euros does occur, but is concentrated in a few specialized areas such as tax law, tax criminal law and white-collar criminal law.
Whether Google Ads is expensive for your law firm therefore depends on which click you buy for which case. If you treat general information searches, specific legal problems and direct requests for a lawyer the same way, you lose a considerable part of your budget. If you manage practice areas, case types, urgency and case values separately, you can win new clients profitably even in competitive markets.
