- There is no best SEO agency across the board, only one for your goals, your industry and your internal setup.
- What counts most are verifiable results, transparency in contract and way of working, and genuine customer reviews.
- Google itself warns: Nobody can guarantee a number 1 ranking, and advice on AI search must be consistent with Google's official guidance.
- A good agency measures SEO by inquiries, revenue and profit contribution and leaves accounts and data with you.
In Germany, a great many agencies offer search engine optimization, from specialized boutiques to large performance agencies. From the outside, many offerings look the same: technical SEO, content, link building, reporting. Whether an agency fits your company only becomes clear in the collaboration, and switching costs time and visibility.
We are an SEO agency ourselves. A ranking of our competitors would therefore not be neutral, and we do not publish one. Instead, we show which criteria to use to compare agencies, which questions Google itself recommends and how to recognize an agency that turns your visibility into inquiries and profit.
Six criteria decide whether an SEO agency is right for you
Not every criterion carries the same weight. We weight them as follows:
| Criterion | Weighting |
|---|---|
| Verifiable client success and case studies | High |
| Transparency in way of working and contract terms | High |
| Customer reviews, for example on Google or ProvenExpert | High |
| Industry awards and certifications | Medium |
| Team size and specialization | Medium |
| Years in the market and industry experience | Medium |
Client success counts most, because it shows what an agency has actually achieved. Check whether case studies name real clients, state a time period and describe results relevant to a business: inquiries, revenue, profit contribution, not just rankings.
Transparency determines the collaboration. A good agency explains which measures it implements and why. Terms, notice periods and the question of who owns accounts and data are clearly stated in the contract.
Reviews show how other clients experienced the collaboration. Read the texts, not just the stars: Recurring statements about availability, reliability and results say more than an average rating.
Awards, team size and experience are important indications, but no guarantee. A large team only helps you if the specialists actually work on your project. Ask who will actually manage your account.
For orientation, we list some other SEO agencies in Germany, in alphabetical order and without rank or rating. Check each one with the same questions as us.

Google itself names the questions you should ask every agency
In its Search Central documentation, Google has published a guide to choosing SEO service providers. The questions from it are a good basis for any initial consultation:
- Can you show examples of previous work and success stories?
- Do you follow the Google Search Essentials?
- What results do you expect, in what time frame, and how do you measure success?
- What experience do you have in our industry, in our country or city, and with international websites?
- How long have you been in business?
- How do you communicate with us, and do you explain every change and its reason?
- What interests you about our business?
The last question is the most revealing. According to Google, a good agency asks what makes your company unique, who your competitors are and how your customers find you. We go one step further and start with the business model: Margins, customer value and sales process determine which queries are worthwhile for you.
Google also recommends obtaining references from previous clients and initially giving an agency only read access to Search Console for the audit.
A reputable agency explains every step and promises no rankings
Google is clear on this point: Nobody can guarantee a number 1 ranking. According to Google, warning signs are promises of a “special relationship” with Google, link building through networks or submission to thousands of search engines, unsolicited emails about your rankings and a vague or secretive description of the work.
There is a practical reason for this. As the website operator, you are liable for measures that violate Google's spam policies: In the worst case, your website loses visibility or drops out of the index entirely. So insist that every significant change is documented and justified.
Good agencies measure SEO by your profit
Rankings and traffic are intermediate steps. What matters is whether visibility leads to inquiries and sales, and whether these contribute to profit. A number 1 position for a term that brings no customers looks good in the report and does not change your bottom line.
So ask how the agency measures success. A good answer includes clean tracking of inquiries and sales, the connection to your CRM data and an evaluation by profit contribution. Equally important: Accounts, data and tracking belong to you. You should be able to switch at any time without losing data or history.
AI search changes what you should expect from an SEO agency
AI Overviews, Google's AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions directly and name only a few companies. Many agencies now offer dedicated services for this, under names such as GEO or AEO.
Google recommends checking such offers: The advice must be consistent with Google's official guidance on AI search. There, Google makes clear that optimizing for AI search is still SEO; special files such as an llms.txt or special structured data are not needed for Google Search.
What works is content with its own perspective, its own data and experience. So ask an agency how it builds this substance with you. More on this in our article on generative engine optimization.

Conclusion: The best agency is the one whose work you can follow
Rankings on the web help with initial orientation, but do not replace your own review. Compare agencies based on documented results, transparent contracts and the question of how well they understand your business.
An agency that first asks about your goals, margins and customers, explains every measure and measures success by profit contribution is the right choice, regardless of where it stands in a list.
